Who Listens To The Words That I Speak: One Question with K. Russell

TheGourdsNews: With over 1 million hits to date, the most popular homemade "Gin and Juice" video on YouTube now offers the following message: "This song was done by 'The Gourds'. nobody else. now they want me to remove the video...should i? i aint makin any money off it". Just out of curiosity, is any of that true?

Kevin Russell: Yep. I asked him to take it down. It is just stupid and not representative of The Gourds at all. If there was even a shred of wit to it, I'd be okay with it maybe. Not gonna make a big deal out of it. I just asked the guy. The fact that he did not respect The Gourds' wishes shows that it is possible to like a song but not the band that created it. That is the basic problem with "Gin and Juice", the fans who have tunnel vision about this song make us not want to play it. I thought I had asked someone [else] to get it taken down. But, it is still there.

Note: Claude, Kevin, and Jimmy (a.k.a. Chaille B., Shinyribs, and j. gourd) discuss this topic in the comments section.

**Unplugged version. As the band came back for the encore, their soundman told them the PA system had to be turned off. Since they had already put their guitars back on, they decided to continue without power. To be able to hear everything, "the crowd got deathly quiet". On All the Labor, "Jimmy stood out in the front of the stage and belted it out, almost a cappella" (K. Langford, personal communication, October 21, 2009). "The total silence as Jimmy sang was magical...Late night, cold with smoke and ash from the fires drifting over us. We were like gypsies" (K. Russell, personal communication, October 21, 2009).

Note: Soundcheck for the late set began with a few

Vintage Gourds: 6-01-97 Dallas, TX

Okay, so here's how it all went down. A little over 12 years ago, The Gourds played a gig at an all-day event in Dallas called Barley-Palooza. The show was captured on video from two angles by a guy named Jeff, who lives in Washington. A separate audio recording was also made by a guy named Stan, who lives in Idaho. A couple of months ago, Jeff went looking for someone to put the whole thing together and found Joe in California. So, in a variation of the West Coast Effect, Washington, Idaho, and California have combined to bring back a truly unusual Gourds performance....the old-timey, 4-piece version with original Welsh drummer, Charlie Llewellin, and without multi-instrumentalist Max Johnston, who hadn't yet joined the band. The complete show can be viewed here for free:

When Kevin Russell, vocalist for the quirky Americana band The Gourds, calls East Tennessee a "hotbed" of freakdom, he means it with great fondness.

To Russell and his bandmates, those fringe elements of society -- the individuals who get branded as "weird" or "odd" or downright freakish -- those are their kinds of people. They're sought out and offered a place in The Gourds' kingdom, because they're the ones with stories to tell.

And for a band that thrives on a unique brand of storytelling, those tales are the stuff that makes life worth living and singing about.

"To a certain degree, I think we are freak magnets because of the nature of what we do," Russell told The Daily Times during a recent phone interview. "I think musicians in general are going to tell you that you'll meet some interesting people and quite a cast along the way. We just appreciate people, especially colorful people with personality, because they're just more interesting to us.

"We like to hang out with somebody like that and hear their story, to get a feel for their language and the way they talk and the phrases they use. To us, America is a great place that way -- still full of crazy, crazy people. We like to keep them hidden in America -- they're definitely not put on TV or talked about -- but we generally seem to find them everywhere we go.

"It's been that way since The Gourds first debuted in 1996 with "Dem's Good Beeble," quickly establishing themselves as a phenomenal live act, something Russell has described as "kind of a cross between a revival and a house party and a pep rally and a powwow." The group found minor fame with a cover of rapper Snoop Dog's "Gin and Juice," released on the 1998 EP "gogitchershinebox," and ever since, the guys have earned a reputation as the Primus of roots music -- heavy on accordion flourishes and percussion and a washboard full of string instruments thrown into the mix.

With the band's most recent album -- "Haymaker!," released earlier this year -- The Gourds got back to more of an Americana sound than the classic and psychedelic rock overtones of their previous two records, "Heavy Ornamentals" and "Noble Creatures."

The record developed, Russell said, when the band performed at a wedding for original drummer Charlie Llewellin, who paid the guys $1,000.

"We took that and decided to go rent out a studio and record these songs that me and (bassist) Jimmy (Smith) had," he said. "It was really going to be a glorified demo; just the basic idea that we could give to the other guys so they could work on their parts. But once it was recorded, the sound was so cool and the performance was so relaxed and live-sounding, we realized that was exactly what we wanted the record to be -- us playing in a room.

"Sometimes that's really hard to get when you try, so we felt we should just trust our intuition about it. We had it done in a couple of days, and the other parts just needed to be filled in. To me, it was a little more liberating and easier to do, based on everyone's lives and schedules. Basically, the overwhelming motive and drive behind it was that we just had to make a record.

"It's difficult, however, to imagine anything in The Gourds universe as "overwhelming." There's such a laid-back vibe to the band that, if you didn't already know what ace musicians they are, you'd swear they sneak away to find a shady spot to nap in during the middle of the afternoon. Not that there's anything wrong with that -- although, relaxed as Russell might sound, there's always been a hardscrabble work ethic to the band.

"Our motivation and goal is to do whatever we've got to do to get it done, and I think 'Haymaker!' does have that kind of feel," Russell said. "It's sort of driven by the necessity and reality of our lives. We spend so much time playing that there's not a lot of time for anything else. Making a record has become tough.

"But, he added, that's the group's lot in this musical life -- make a record and tour; rinse and repeat. They love it, regardless of whatever headaches it occasionally causes. And when they come to a place like Knoxville, -- where they'll perform Thursday (Oct. 15), it makes it worthwhile.

Because that, Russell said, is where they find their people.

"East Tennessee is a hotbed of freaks," he said with a chuckle. "In general, it has a regional color all its own. It's just a real special place. That's where country music came from and still comes from. I don't know why Nashville got it all, because the heart of it is still there in Knoxville."

October 7, 2009

The Gourds are just about the most joyous group of contrarians in music. Try to describe them and you’re stuck. It’s a little country, little folky, a little old-timey and a little progressive. There are elements of Tex-Mex, Cajun, rock, bluegrass and jazz. Despite a solid catalog of original songs, the recording that has cemented the group’s music with most of the world is a take on Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” that is both hilarious and absolutely serious music.

“There’s nobody like us. That’s our blessing and our curse,” says Gourds vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Kevin Russell in a phone call while traveling to Little Rock, Ark.

That has been the case since the mid-1990s when the band formed and began recording albums and touring the country. The group has eschewed the rules of marketing and making it in music — outside of regular touring. The group was loved by audiences, but misunderstood by many in the music industry who didn’t quite get the band’s happy abandon.

“There’s no rules about it,” says Russell. “We hate rules. We’re just the most rebellious nonconformist bunch of guys. When we were at the AMA’s (Americana Music Awards) in Nashville last night I could tell everybody was bristling just being in that jive. ... Somebody asked us, ‘When are you going to play Nashville again?’ And I said, ‘Hopefully never! I never want to play this town again!’ They said, ‘Well, I see you in Knoxville.’ I told him, ‘Knoxville’s great. There are human beings there!’”

Russell says he dislikes the attitude in the Nashville where there seems to be a class system.

“I’m friendly to everyone,” he says, “from Emmylou Harris to the parking lot attendant lady.”

Russell says he only recognized after having children that he was fated to be a musician and songwriter.

“The great American manufacturers of guitars are Martin and Gibson,” Russell notes. “I realized after I had kids that my kindergarten teacher and first-grade teacher were named Miss Martin and Miss Gibson. My first-grade teacher told my mother I was a writer. She told my mother, ‘He can’t spell and he can’t read but he’s a good writer!’ I used to write all the time — still do.”

Russell says he’s begun writing in a more linear and narrative style in song over the past few years, but the band consciously didn’t write that way when the Gourds first started.

“In the early part of our career we were really about destroying that,” says Russell. “We were more into stream-of-consciousness, using impressionistic flights of language to create something.”

Now bits and pieces of things that might become songs become Twitter messages. Russell says he uses Twitter like other people might use an idea a notebook.

“If I see something interesting or I come up with a line I just Twitter it,” he says. “But that whole idea of, ‘What are you doing right now?’ I don’t get that.”

While the Gourds are going strong, Russell has started a side-band called Shinyribs with Gourds drummer Keith Langford and some other Austin musicians to supplement his need to constantly create music.

“Yeah, my dad said I needed something to fall back on — so I started another band!”

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town: One Question with K. Russell

© Tomski

TheGourdsNews: Looked like you were rocking a different guitar at Threadgill's last night?

Kevin Russell: Oh, yes, the Silvertone. It's a 1964 Silvertone Bobkat S1476 given to me during the [Picket Line] Coyote years by Travis Garaffa. I used it on some recordings I did at Cedar Creek Studios with Jim Wilson, who has mastered most Gourds recordings. For some reason I stuck a bunch of Santa Claus stickers on it. I was into collage and found object stuff back then. I came across an unusual open tuning on this guitar that I called Santa Claus tuning (E,B,E,B,E,F#) maybe I shoulda called it BEEF# (laughs). There are a few great songs I can barely remember now, written in this drone tuning. That thought gives me a sort of panic feeling of all the songs I have abadoned along the way. I want to go back and get them but I may turn into a pillar of salt. Anyway, I abandoned the guitar for years because I could not solve a grounding problem. It cracked and popped at bad times while playing it. I ended up forgetting about it in my gardening shed, in its case of course, but it went through a couple of years worth of seasons out there. I think I dreamed about it one night, woke up, and went out to get it. I navigated some known yellow jacket nests in the dark to pull it out. The strings were completely rusted but the neck seemed in good shape. I gave it a good cleaning and took it to a guitar/amp guy to see if he could fix the grounding problem. Of course, it wouldn't make the sound for him. It still does, but I change the way I play to avoid it. It sounds real unique and woody because of the wooden bridge. Fun to play, too, like a toy guitar. I am just crushing on it a bit right now.

It Won't Be Long: One Question with C. Bernard

TheGourdsNews: Tom Labinski, a fan from Austin, Texas writes, "Why does Claude have Sgt. Pepper-era photos of Paul, George, and Ringo on his keyboard...but not John?

Claude Bernard: Here's the thing about John. And uh, you know, it's hard for me to say this, cuz, like, we all feel kinda like we knew John, ya know? But I'm just gonna put it straight out on the stoop and see if the cat sups. Here goes. John was a big asshole. Shea Stadium reeked of his farts for weeks afterward. 'E was a fookin' prat, 'e was. Not welcome on my piano keyboard. Nah, I take that back. John was a good plonker. It's like the Sandman said in Spiderman 3, "I'm not a bad person. Just had bad luck". John was kinda like that. Yeah. No, but what's REALLY happening on my piano keyboard is sort of...eerie. The Beatles are disappearing in the same order that they died. The constant casing/uncasing friction has done a number on the Fab Four. John just kind of curled up and flooped over the edge of the Nord. Then George started looking a bit careworn. I think i might be putting my beer on his face, though. Ringo's got a wrinkle, which doesn't bode well for him. Paul is holding steady. Paul always had the best karma. Swampy Pat put all this crap on my Nord during his tenure with us. He called it my "mojo". Pictures of R2-D2, zombies feasting on the living, fireworks packaging, Keith Richards and the Beatles and whatever else. Sometimes I would just find little stuff sitting on top of my keyboard. A little squeezable wizard guy, mini-ninja guy, a baboon with a horrendously realistic ass. He would only do it on rare occasions when he thought I needed that "little push over the cliff". Since we fired Swampy my program done got funkier than a pair of old shoes. That is to say, "I've lost me mojo". But you know what, baby? It's getting better all the time.
