  1. The Gourds returned from their Northeast Tour with a homecoming show at the Shady Grove, the last of the restaurant's summer "unplugged" series on Thursday nights. With rows and rows of chairs set up in front of the stage and the need to get there hours and hours before showtime to get a decent seat, I'd just about given up on going to the Grove shows. But with a baby in tow this year, we set up our Blanket Show off in the lawn, way off to the side of the stage along Barton Springs Road. We couldn't see the band at all from where we sat, but we had speakers near us so we could hear just fine. Lots of people with their babies near us, and it was fun watching the little one's dance and react to the music. It was 11-month-old Evan's second Gourds show, but he mostly slept through the Old Settlers setin April. He seemed to really get off on Mr. Betty, so I think he's an official fan. As the setlist hints at, they came our rocking for the supposedly "unplugged" set. Not being able to see the band for most of the night made it a different kind of show, but very enjoyable nonetheless. I'm sure it's a great venue for the band to make some new fans, as most of the people on the lawn seemed to be in their 20s. And being nearly a two-month stretch since I had seen the Gourds, it felt good just to have the music wash over me again.

  2. After catching the Gourds and Shinyribs in the village of NYC, where cold ones bruised my budget, it was a pure joy to see them play in Austin- where the brews were cheaper, the wine sweeter, the folks friendlier, and the tacos much tastier. Catching Shiny at the classic Saxon Pub on Wednesday and The Gourds at Shady Grove on Thursday, a girl couldn't have been happier to celebrate her 45th bday this way, after flying in from Rochester, NY a couple of hours before Shiny started singin'. (Thanks Delta for the on time ETA) Both shows were simply awesome and once I unpack, I'll be emailing some great shots I took...met a ton of fine folk in Austin and looking forward to seeing them all again on our next trip soon- thanks so much to Kev and Gourds for one kick ass trip! And for playing my fave song, Pine Island Bayou!
