Few things are better than the pure joy of children dancing with zero inhibitions when it's mixed with the pure joy of Gourds music. That's why I've loved the monthly Family Socials so much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great opportunity for the fans with kids to be able to bring them out to an early show, in the heart of downtown Austin, on a perfect late-September night, and celebrate family, music and life.
Cedar Street Courtyard is a very nice venue. The music takes place outside in a long, rectangular patio, and on either side (indoors) are two giant bars w/ great selections.
The first 10 yards or so in front of the stage was set up for dancers, and that was filled tonight with chil'en. Gourds kids, fan kids, spinning kids, falling kids, jumping kids and especially smiling kids. It was infectious.
The music itself was good and relaxed. A rare and cool Magnolia and El Paso got things off to a rocking start, and the momentum didn't let up. Honeysuckle, Blanket Show, Waxy's Dargle, Country Love and Tex Mex Mile all whizzed by. I think it was Claude who quipped that it was 35 minutes of nonstop dancing from the little ones.
One of the real highlights for me was Kev's tremendous mandolin work on Omaha, which spiraled up and hit a thrilling peak at the end. Also a rare two songs from Claude was a great surprise. As much as I wanted to hear Chinese Variety Hour, this wasn't the time or place.
But it wasn't all G-rated. Kev dedicated Tex Mex Mile to the kids ("It's a true story!") and when he mused that Texas' new car seat law meant you had to keep them in those contraptions until they were 16, Jimmy remembered that "they used to pass us along like doobies in the back seat of the Cadillac when I was a kid."
The band really kept up the pace throughout the show. and the under- 4-foot crowd went home very tired. "When you put them to bed tonight, you can thank The Gourds," Shinyribs said.
